‘The Widow’, as Veuve Clicquot is affectionately known, is one of the best-known and most enjoyed Champagnes in the world.
Clicquot’s Yellow Label Brut NV is full-bodied and richly flavoured, due to it being aged twice as long as other non-vintage Champagnes – unsurprising for the Champagne house that developed the use of riddling racks over 200 years ago. A taste of summer fruits, quince and apple initially hit the palate, followed by a toasty brioche that gives way to vanilla; all in all a delicious balance of elegant and punchy flavours that come together in an incredibly fine effervescence. The combination of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay grapes are always rounded off with a certain amount of the highest-quality reserve wines, making this one of the finest non-vintage Champagnes available.
In the words of passionate winemaker, and chef de caves at Veuve Clicquot, Dominique Demarville, ‘Quality is the Veuve Clicquot philosophy. Madame Clicquot’s motto was: “Only one quality, the finest”. It is the same under my rule’. He also recommends pairing this Yellow Label Brut NV with something as equally luxurious – scallops; the full-bodied, yet fresh Champagne adding a delicious length to the delicate flavour of the seafood. Try it also with small squares of comté cheese as something a little bit different to your usual pre-dinner canapé.
So for that special occasion, treat yourself to a bottle from any leading retailer.
However if you prefer to support your highly respected independent retailer then I would recommend Taurus Wines in Surrey.
